In the world of nonprofit fundraising, where relationship-building, strategic thinking, and donor stewardship are essential, mentoring plays a transformative role. This is something we see often at Advancement Advisors, where impactful mentorship consistently helps build stronger, more effective fundraising teams. As nonprofit organizations adapt to changing donor expectations, digital tools, and evolving philanthropic trends, passing knowledge from seasoned professionals to emerging fundraisers becomes more crucial than ever.
Why Mentorship Matters in Nonprofit Fundraising
Fundraising is fundamentally relationship-driven, yet many professionals enter the field without formal training. Unlike careers with standardized educational tracks, fundraising skills are often learned through on-the-job experiences—and more effectively, through mentorship.
Experienced fundraisers carry invaluable institutional knowledge about donor cultivation, campaign strategy, gift solicitation, and crisis response—insights that are rarely taught in classrooms. They understand the delicate balance of persistence and patience, the optimal timing for major gift asks, and the emotional resilience needed to lead successful campaigns in both stable and turbulent times.
For early-career professionals, mentorship in fundraising offers immediate and long-term advantages:
- Exposure to real-world problem-solving strategies
- Greater confidence and professional clarity
- Expanded networks in the nonprofit development space
- Deeper understanding of how their role aligns with the organization’s mission
Mentors also benefit. Guiding a colleague clarifies their own practices and brings fresh perspectives to long-standing challenges.
Organizations that promote fundraising mentorship programs see measurable benefits, as well, including:
- Higher staff retention
- Stronger fundraising results
- A culture of learning and collaboration
As veteran fundraisers approach retirement, mentoring ensures that hard-earned expertise doesn’t leave with them. Instead, it’s passed forward to empower the next generation.
Introducing AFP WPA’s Power Pairings Mentoring Program
To make mentoring in nonprofit development more accessible, I collaborated with the Association of Fundraising Professionals Western PA Chapter (AFP WPA) to launch the Power Pairings Mentoring Program.
This innovative program addresses a common barrier in traditional mentoring models: the time commitment. Power Pairings builds on the successful “Perfect Pairings” initiative launched during the pandemic and adapts it for today’s fast-paced professional environment. The new model features:
- 2 to 4 targeted mentoring sessions over a period of up to six months
- Connecting experienced fundraising professionals with emerging leaders for collaboration on specific fundraising challenges, career development, and skill-building
The program welcomes mentors with at least five years of fundraising experience and mentees seeking guidance across specialties from annual giving to capital campaigns. Whether you’re ready to give back to the field or seeking to accelerate your development, Power Pairings offers a structured pathway to meaningful professional relationships. You can sign up as a mentor here, or sign up as a mentee here. For questions, email: office@afpwpa.org.

Mentoring in fundraising isn’t just about skill-sharing—it’s about strengthening the entire nonprofit ecosystem. Every insight shared about donor relations and every word of encouragement during challenging campaigns contributes to a stronger nonprofit community.
Programs like AFP WPA’s Power Pairings remove barriers to participation and make mentoring more practical for today’s professionals. The power of mentorship lies not only in what’s taught but in what’s caught: the confidence, passion, and commitment to excellence that transforms good fundraisers into great ones.
